Glossy light brown with some darker olive brown in protected areas. Smooth with trivial marks. Apparently a contemporary copy that circulated alongside "normal" large cents. Only a few are known and all seen have the cud break at BUT. Weight 141.5 grains, about 25 grains lower than the 168-grain standard at that time. Struck with the reverse rotated 20 degrees clockwise relative to the head-to-head die orientation used for the regular large cents. A very curious piece, similar to the famous Small Date 1848 fantasy cent mentioned in the Newcomb reference on the series. The last one we have seen offered was the 2002 EAC Sale, lot 631-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/19/2010:632 example that brought $253. The example offered here is marginally finer than the Holmes piece.
