Frosty dark bluish steel brown and chocolate with very faded red in protected areas on the obverse. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. This cent was dipped long ago but the toning is attractive and was deemed original by the graders at PCGS. Just a few minor marks including a thin diagonal nick right of star 2, a puff of darker toning at star 8, and two tiny ticks on the rim over star 11. EDS. The repunching under the 185 is dull are barely visible. This is the discovery coin for the variety, confirmed for Gary Ruttenberg by this cataloger in 1993. Since then the confirmed population has risen to 35 but only 6 of those grade EF40 or better. Still the rarest die variety of the year by a good margin. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Twin Leaf Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer, 1 in 64BN, 1 in 65BN.Ex Douglas F. Bird 6/1992-Gary M. Ruttenberg, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 8/19/1995:753-R. S.
