Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint red on both sides. The fields are satiny, nearly free of marks, and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. A tiny void on the rim right of star 7, a tiny rim nick at star 9, and a barely visible scuff close under the earlobe are the only marks, and they are barely visible with a good glass. EDS, die state a, the earliest state seen. The reverse fields are smooth and fine vertical lapping lines run from the A in STATES down to the O in ONE and C in CENT. A very shallow low spot (caused by debris/lubricant on the die) covers the upper half of the neck and lower half of the cheek, plus another shows over ENT in CENT. A very attractive example of this tough variety, and it comes with a nice provenance. Our grade is MS62, tied for finest known with one other example in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer in BN.Ex Howard R. Newcomb (as a duplicate N-5, which shares this obverse die)-unknown-Stack's 3/11/1998:256-Chris McCawley 4/1998-R. S.
