Lustrous light olive and steel brown with 25% of the obverse and nearly half of the reverse showing original mint red. The only marks are a speck of fine carbon on the tip of the nose and a few very faint traces of old fingerprints near the dentils from star 2 to star 5 and around MERICA. Rare EDS (although not quite the earliest seen), die state a, with three vertical die lines up from the dentils below 54 and very fine parallel lines at S-OF. The fields are just starting to show faint radial die flowlines from the dentil tips on both sides. A very shallow low spot covers the neck (caused by debris/lubricant on the die, a nearly universal feature on this variety regardless of the die state). A great example of a very tough die state. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64, and CC#2 for the variety but finest of die state a in the Grellman census. This die state was missing in the fabulous Naftzger and Holmes collections. Only 8 mint state examples of the variety, regardless of the die state, have been recorded in the Grellman census, and this collection has three of the very best among that small group. The ANS Collection example is a cleaned VF. PCGS population 1, none finer in RB.Ex Heritage Auctions 9/7/2016:3460-Chris McCawley-John Davis CollectionCertificate # 1905.65/83889535
