Date: 1853Rather glossy light olive blending to reddish light chocolate in protected areas. There are a few marks including a dull one in the hair above the E and some more on star 12. Who cares! What matters is the dramatic mint error and split planchet. The first strike was about 10% off center to K-11 and the second was centered on the planchet but rotated about 35 degrees clockwise relative to the first. The planchet cracked in several places and separated into two pieces with other incomplete fissures waiting for the right moment to separate. OK, maybe that's too dramatic, but you can see the additional fissures and you may want to use extra caution when handling the coin just in case. The planchet must have been brittle, perhaps a result of multiple strikes that hardened the metal. Bold undertype is visible on both sides and a complete but faint "3" from the first strike shows left of star 11. A wonderful mint error and a great conversation piece.
