Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown and olive with at least a third of the mint color remaining, mostly on the obverse. The notable defects are a spot of dark chocolate brown toning in the hair at the main curl, another on the rim at star 6, and one more on the rim at the first A in AMERICA. Would rate a higher grade if not for a very thin layer of lacquer or some similar coating covering both sides (easily missed). MDS, die state c. The horizontal die lines from the main curl are gone and the lump under the left foot of the Y is clear. Some of the die lines at the inner curl remain visible. This is Newcomb's #9. Plated on the back right page in the second edition (1987) of the Grellman reference on the cents of 1840-1857. Comes with a nice provenance. Ex John P. Young, Barney Bluestone 4/27/1945:913-T.
