1851 N-44 R7 Fair-2Sharpness VG8 but there is a crude hole punched through the coin at the bottom of star 8 (most likely by a nail, perhaps to attach the coin above the entrance to a dwelling). Otherwise smooth with trivial marks. Glossy light olive blending to medium chocolate and olive brown in protected areas. The repunching at both of the 1's is clear and the "puffy" or "pillowed" fields on both sides are obvious. This is the discovery coin for the die variety (discovered by Donald Weathers in 10/1991) and since then 6 more have been found. One of the rarest varieties in the 1840-1857 series of large cents. This piece is CC#7 among the known examples (only 2 of which grade better than VG10).Certificate Number: Pedigree: Ex Donald Weathers, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 7/1993:310-Donald Weathers, 1995 EAC Sale, lot 465-Stuart M.
