Lustrous bright mint red fading to steel brown on the devices, more than half the red showing. Trivial defects including a spot of darker brown toning at the bottom of star 7, a small spot of very fine carbon just right of star 1, a smooth planchet chip on the rim left of star 2 (as struck), and traces of an old fingerprint at star 10. Otherwise this cent is flawless. M-LDS, die state b. A small lump shows on the bottom edge of the curl over the left side of the second 8, the fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines, and the die lines at NITE are dull and mostly gone. A very attractive red & brown cent. Our grade is MS63+, tied for CC#3 for the die variety in the Grellman census. This cent is plated inside the front cover of the second (2001) edition of the Grellman reference on the cents of 1840-1857. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.Ex Thomas D.
