Date: 1847Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown with underlying very faded mint color in the obverse fields and at least 25% of the brighter mint color remaining on the reverse. A choice cent if not for a few small spots of darker olive brown and steel toning (not carbon) around the earlobe and a couple more hidden in protected areas around the hair bun. Very rare M-LDS, die state c, with a small but clearly defined rim cud break over AM. Tied for CC#6 for the variety but finest by a small margin among the 10 examples known with the single rim cud. This cent is plated inside the front cover of the second (1987) edition of the Grellman book on late date (1840-1857) cents. A beautiful example of a great die state, and it comes with a very nice provenance.Ex James David Duncan, Numismatic and Antiquarian Service Corporation of America (NASCA) 7/29/1980:13-Bertram M.
