Lustrous light bluish steel brown with 5-10% of the mint red remaining. Satiny and flawless except for a shallow carbon spot on the cheek. Very sharply struck from the earliest state of the dies. The Breen-46 "proof" from this die pair has reflective fields; the fields on this piece are satiny (see page 84 in the 1977 reference Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1977). But all the fine die lines and details in the devices are as sharp as they come, the reverse is uncracked, and the repunching on the 18 is bold. An impressive cent in spite of the spot. Tied for CC#3 of the variety in the Grellman census.Ex Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
