Sharpness close to mint state but lightly cleaned long ago, now nicely retoned frosty light to medium brown blending to light chocolate. There are attractive bluish steel overtones in protected areas of the reverse and traces of very faded red on both sides. No spots or stains. The toning looks original and this cent has very nice eye appeal. The only marks are a couple thin, light nicks right of star 7, a small area of very fine roughness between the hair bun and star 10, a shallow planchet cutter impression on the outside edge of the rim at star 13 (as struck), and a very tiny rim nick over the second T in STATES. LDS, die state d, with a fine die crack through the tops of TE in STATES. There is sharp doubling from die bounce at ES-OF-AMERICA, with additional doubling at other places on the reverse. CC#3 for this tough die variety and the next finest grades only VF35+ in the Grellman census. An impressive cent that comes with an important provenance.Ex Sam M. Koeppel 1938-R. E.
