Chocolate brown with smooth, reflective surfaces on both sides. The earliest die state seen of this die variety with microscopic die polishing lines in the fields, clearest on the reverse where there are many fine die lines not mentioned in the Grellman reference. The cud break at stars 3-4 is clear and it extends to slightly below star 3. Just light friction on the highest points and a few minor marks. A small planchet chip at the lower right point of star 3 (as struck) is the best identifying mark. VEDS, die state a early. The leaves below ES-OF are very softly struck while the obverse is as sharp as they come. A neat cent.Ex G. Lee Kuntz, Superior 10/6/1990:527-Fred H.
