Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. An attractive cent that has mint state eye appeal, but there is a trace of friction on the highest points of the portrait. No spots, stains, or notable contact marks, but there are some tiny planchet flakes: one right of star 4, another close to the head right of star 7, one on the rim at star 8, and several microscopic ones on the jaw and truncation (all as struck). The reverse is choice. MDS with flowlined fields but dentils show all the way around the reverse, although some are weak. The reverse was struck using a real double die (not strike or "machine doubling"), and strong doubling is clearly visible on the berries under TED ST. The only middle date cent (1816-1839) that was struck using a clearly doubled die. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
