Choice lustrous steel brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning covering the protected areas on both sides. No spots or stains, only a hint of friction on the highest points and a few trivial contact marks. A tiny planchet flake on the top of the 8, a barely visible diagonal planchet depression right of star 1, and a line of microscopic ticks over EN in CENT are the best identifying marks, and it takes a strong glass to see them. LDS with a clearly defined rim cud break over D-STA. Our grade is AU58+. Clearly superior to the best examples of the variety in the Naftzger and Holmes collections, and the variety was missing in the superior Ahumada collection. A single mint state (MS60) example is listed in the Noyes census (the misattributed Garrett N-6, Bowers & Ruddy, 11/28/1979:172) but in our opinion it is dull and not fully mint state either. A side-by-side comparison would be interesting. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.
