Lustrous medium brown and light olive with peeps of faded mint red showing in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. The fields are satiny and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No spots or stains, and the only marks are three light diagonal nicks under the eye and one more on the chin. The surfaces are consistent with a mint state coin but the strike is relatively weak on the upper half of the portrait, especially along the top of the head. This cent has very little real wear and the weakness on the head appears to be from a clog on the die (oil or grease). Rare LDS with die cracks through stars 8 & 9 to the dentils at stars 7 & 10. Graded EF45 Choice and CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #28637. Our grade is AU50. Only a single mint state example is known, and it is in the ANS Collection. An important cent. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
