Very attractive light olive brown and bluish steel with generous peeps of mellowed mint red on both sides. The surfaces are highly lustrous and this half cent has great eye appeal. The only defects are some trivial contact marks in the field before the portrait, none visible to the unaided eye. Nicely struck E-MDS, Manley state 2.0, Fuhrman state 1 late, with sharp die clashmarks inside the wreath. The earlier spike from the wreath left of the C in CENT is gone and traces of die rust show over the first A in AMERICA. This is the Breen plate coin for the obverse of the variety and both sides are plated to show his die state II (which Breen calls Rare; see page 328 of his 1983 Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857). Our grade is MS63. Housed in an older generation PCGS slab.
