Frosty olive brown and chocolate with traces of faded mint red showing in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. Hints of bluish steel overtone show on both sides. Sharply struck with full radial lines in all the stars. Just a few trivial ticks on the cheek and some more in the field before the mouth, none significant. Later die state with a radial die crack from the upper right point of star 13 to the dentils in addition to the usual cracks through the date and stars. The die cracks on the obverse are clear and the strike on the O in ONE and E in CENT is relatively weak. This is the plate coin for the 1827 N-9 obverse in the 1940 Newcomb reference on the cents of 1816-1857. Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60, and the cent has choice mint state eye appeal. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
