1825 N-5 R6+ PCGS VF Details, Environmental DamageSharpness VF20 but the surfaces are slightly dull and covered with uniform extremely fine granularity. The fields and protected areas are dark steel while the toning on the devices is a lighter shade of steel brown. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a small chip out of the rim below the 2 and a minor rim bruise at the M in AMERICA. The attribution points are clear including the horizontal line below the berries left of the O in ONE. This was the third example of the variety discovered following the initial "rediscovery" by Tom Deck in November of 2011 (obtained incorrectly attributed as N-4 on eBay). The story of the rediscovery is explained in an in-depth article by Paul Gilkes in the January 2013 edition of Coin World (see pages 5 and 48). Frank D. Andrews published a reference in 1883 that described this variety, but Newcomb and all subsequent researchers discounted the Andrews assessment and delisted the variety. But Tom Deck proved that Andrews was correct, and the current references include the Andrews 5/Newcomb-5 variety. Since that time 17 more examples have been found, nearly all in low grade and most with significant defects. To date the total has reached 18 pieces, and the piece offered here (the third one discovered) is the sharpest of the group. Graded F15 net VG10 by Noyes and finest known in his census, his photo #69527. Our grade is VF20 sharpness net F12. We know of one other example that is comparable to this piece; not quite as sharp but with better surfaces and color in spite of some verdigris and a planchet lamination. An important example of one of the rarest varieties in the entire series of Middle Date Large Cents (1816-1839).Certificate Number: 522136.97/30808989Pedigree: Ex Chris McCawley (via J. R.
