Attractive glossy olive brown and steel with lighter olive brown and chocolate toning on the devices. The planchet is smooth but there are light contact marks scattered over both sides. The notable marks are a light scratch in the field close before the brow, a vertical nick at the top of the E in CENT, and a nick close under the diagonal of the N in ONE. This is the discovery coin for the variety (1984) and since then 13 more have been found, most of those in grades of Good or lower. The variety is easily identified as the only 1822 with the legend very close to the wreath, especially ME in AMERICA to the leaf below. This reverse was first used to strike the 1821 N-1 die variety and appears here in a later die state with a die crack across the lower reverse from the I in UNITED to the C in AMERICA. Apparently only a few were struck from this die pair before the 1821 reverse die was replaced and the 1822 N-8 strikes began. The obverse die has smooth, very slightly reflective fields and sharp dentils; a new die in its first use. Arguably you could postulate this was probably the first variety struck using the 1822 date. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Noyes and Wright references on the cents of 1816-1839. Graded VF20 net F12 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #25486. Our grade is F12. A highlight of this outstanding collection. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
