Frosty light brown and chocolate with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas. A splash of reddish chocolate toning right of the E in ONE is the only defect that catches the eye; otherwise this cent is choice. The notable contact marks, and they are trivial, are a dull nick on the tip of the nose into the field and some tiny rim nicks at ED in UNITED. LDS. The obverse fields are satiny from fine die flowlines and microscopic die rust. The die line that connected the bases of the T & E in STATES in the earlier state is now incomplete and does not reach the T. A very nice cent, in the upper half of the condition census for this scarce variety. The obverse is choice. Called AU55 and CC#2 among the confirmed examples in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net EF45 and CC#5 in his census, photo #21026. Our grade is AU50. The attribution and Holmes-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
