Sharpness near F12 but covered with moderate granularity. No verdigris but there are some very old scratches hidden in the toning on the obverse, mostly on the portrait. The only other mark is a dull nick left of the bottom of the O in ONE. Dull dark steel and olive brown. Extremely rare very late die state with a retained cud break connecting the 18 to the rim below. The retained cud is nearly fully raised but that section of the die has not completely broken away (so it is still a "retained" cud). Not a beautiful cent but quite rare with the cud break this raised this much. We know of only one example, a net Good-4 piece, that has the complete cud. Noyes graded G5 net AG3, his photo #27278. Bland says VG10 sharpness net G5. Either way this is a very important die state. And it comes with a nice provenance.
