Frosty steel and olive brown with faint hints of reddish tan faded down from mint color in protected areas around the wreath. Satiny flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only defects are a mint-made planchet lamination chip on the rim at star 1 and a tiny planchet flake in the field under the end of the wreath stem. The chip at star 1 catches your eye; the flake under the stem does not. Otherwise this cent is choice and it looks mint state with just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. Nicely struck MDS with a tiny lump on the top of the head where a "Mouse" break is forming, and the larger "Mouse" is faintly outlined above (perhaps we should call this die state the "Phantom Mouse"). The "Mouse" actually looks more like a snake in this intermediate die state with the head to the left and thinner body to the right. A neat die state and it comes with an impressive provenance. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#17 in the Noyes census, his photo #28069. Our grade is AU55. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.
