1817 N-12 R3 AU50Frosty light brown with darker steel brown and chocolate on the right half of both sides. Hints of frosty tan faded down from mint color show in the protected areas on both sides. Lightly worn on the devices with no notable spots or contact marks. A shallow low spot caused by debris on the die is well-hidden in the field between the 1 and the bust tip, and the strike on the upper half of the hair buns is a bit weak, as usual on this variety. M-LDS, die state f, with the obverse die cracks strong. A small internal cud break extends the left side of star 1 and the area outlined by die cracks at stars 1-3 is starting to sink as a retained cud. Ranked as high as CC#5 in the overall condition census for the variety but second finest known of the rare later die state (the finest of the die state is the slightly superior Newcomb:506-Starr:92 example). Called AU50 net EF40 in the Noyes census, his photo #20808. Bland says AU50 and CC#5 overall. An important cent that comes with a very nice provenance.Certificate Number: Pedigree: Ex J. R.
