Lustrous light olive and medium brown with mellowed mint red in protected areas on the obverse. Sharply struck and quite attractive. The only notable mark is a very fine scratch from just left of the top of star 8 into the hair at the top of the head. Coated with a thin layer of "Care" or a similar protectant, and the coating is a bit heavy in the leaves below CA. EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman state 1. The Small 0 inside the Large 0 in the date is sharp and the repunching on stars 3, 6, and 10 is clear. Our grade is MS60+. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen half cent encyclopedia (the large photos, page 294). In addition it is the third piece listed in the Breen condition census for the variety. A superior example of this popular "Redbook" variety, and it comes with a great provenance. (The slab is scratched on the obverse)
