Lustrous steel brown and olive with generous traces of mint red on the obverse. Lighter brown dominates the reverse but there are small swipes of darker chocolate toning scattered over that side and one at the rim before the face. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highpoints. In addition there are some notable marks including a faint scuff of diagonal hairlines on the cheek and jaw, a faint scratch hidden in the hair below the R in LIBERTY, and a dull scratch well hidden along the left edge of the left end of the wreath ribbon. Fortunately that scratch is very easy to overlook. MDS, Breen state V early. The crack through the T in UNITED is just starting to form. The 3 die-cutter errors on the reverse are strong (U over inverted U, 000 denominator, and missing left wreath stem). Not perfect but still one of the finest examples of the 1801 with 3-error reverse, a very popular "Redbook" variety. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#4, his photo #28561. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is net AU50. The 3 ERRORS feature is noted on the PCGS label. Housed in an older generation PCGS slab.
