Date: 1800Lustrous bright original mint red fading to dark steel brown with about 70% of the obverse and 40% of the reverse showing the mint color. Microscopic contact marks cover much of this piece, more than your expect for a piece with this much original red, but none of the marks is significant or distracting. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, Fuhrman state 4. The curl left of the date is now open and the dentils are weak but visible. Most likely this piece is a survivor from a small hoard (Breen estimated 30-100 pieces) discovered in the mid-1930's in Boston. The pieces from this hoard came with significant mint color but are mostly "spotty red or faded red" according to Breen. They are from the later die state with an open curl, and they have been widely dispersed over the decades since the discovery. Our grade is MS60+.3424056-005
