1798 S-159 R3 Style I Hair, Small 8, PCGS graded AU50Frosty tan and light brown blending to steel brown and chocolate on the highpoints. Lightly worn with smooth surfaces but there is an obvious spot of dark toning and very shallow crud left of the hair ribbon and a more subtle streak of reddish brown toning in the field before the face. There are some small contact marks and planchet chips on the chin, neck, and field before the portrait, but they are barely visible to the unaided eye. M-LDS, Breen state V, with several vertical die cracks in the field behind the portrait plus other die cracks and clashmarks at LIB. Graded EF40 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#4 honors with an ANS example, his photo #32340. Our grade is VF30. Another important cent that comes with a nice provenance.Certificate Number: 36041.50/52085732Pedigree: Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 2/7/1945:216-James G.
