Date: 1797Sharpness EF40 and very attractive, but this cent was lightly burnished and expertly retoned. There is no evidence of a reason for burnishing (roughness, marks, etc.) so this was simply an "improvement" to the eye appeal of an otherwise great cent. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with peeps of frost in protected areas that escaped the burnishing. No marks or other defects. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with two die cracks to the E in AMERICA and a very slightly raised retained cud break between the cracks. The edge of the planchet is partially beaded (Breen's II edge variant). Graded EF45 net VF25 by Del Bland. Recognized by Breen as a separate type of 1797 cent but not (yet) recognized as such in the "Redbook," even though the S-134 is the only 1797 cent variety with a small fraction (also seen on four reverses used in 1796). AUCTION TERMS OF SALE
1. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. In case of dispute the auctioneer may at his sole discretion reopen a lot. In all cases the auctioneer’s decision shall be final and binding on bidders.
2. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse to honor any bid which, at his sole discretion, he feels is not submitted in good faith. The auctioneer may withdraw any lot, without prior notice, for any reason whatsoever.
3. All sales are payable in U. S. funds immediately upon receipt of invoice unless other arrangements have been made prior to the sale. Lots will not be released to buyers until paid for in full. Lots delivered in state of sale are subject to all applicable state and local taxes unless appropriate permits are on file with us.
4. Postage will be added to the invoice of all successful mail bidders.
5. A 15% buyer’s fee will be added to all invoices.
6. Please keep in mind this is not an approval sale. All sales are considered final. Sales to the floor may not be returned for any reason save authenticity. Sales to mail bidders are final unless lot proves to have been mis-described.
