Sharpness F12 but covered with fine roughness and there are some contact marks on the reverse. The roughness is strongest in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon and in a small patch in the field off the chin. There is a strong nick at ED that created a subtle bend in the planchet, a dull nick at NE in ONE, and several rim nicks at TED and TAT. Slightly glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. The date is strong and the legends are complete in spite of weakness inside the wreath. M-LDS, Breen state V, with obvious swelling at the bust. This cent was considered by Dr. Sheldon to be the finest known of the variety when he wrote Early American Cents in 1948, and the obverse is plated in Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Comes with a very nice provenance. Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 2/16/1945:142-Dr. William H. Sheldon-Dorothy I. Paschal 12/4/1972-C. Douglas Smith 4/1977-G.
