1797 NC-3 R5+ Fair-2+Slightly sharper but covered with fine to moderate roughness. No verdigris, just a few shallow pits or planchet flakes on the upper part of the obverse. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter brown highlights on the highpoints. The date is complete and clear as is the upper half of the reverse, but the upper obverse and lower part of the reverse are softly struck. Semi-unique terminal die state with a clearly defined cud break at TES. Only two examples of this die state are known; the other is a scudzy G5 net Fair-2 that was lot 176 in the Goldberg sale of the famous R. S. Brown, Jr. collection sold by the Goldbergs on 1/27/1996, and the rim cud is weak on that example. Graded G4 net Fair-2 and tied for finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #62604. This piece is clearly the superior example of the die state.Certificate Number: Pedigree: Ex Tom Hart-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
