1796 S-105 R5- Draped Bust, Repunched 6, PCGS graded MS62+ BrownLustrous light to medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highest points of the devices. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has superior eye appeal. Very sharply struck with only microscopic marks. A light diagonal nick at the hair left of the eyebrow and a shallow planchet void on the edge over the U in UNITED are the only notable defects. MDS, Breen state III, with a curved die line over the Y and sharp die clashmarks on both sides. The repunching on the 6 is bold. Graded MS60 and finest known by 25 points in the Bland census, but his grade was tentative because he had not seen the coin in hand. Noyes says AU55 Choice and finest known by 40 points. Our grade is MS62. Ted Naftzger graded this cent MS65 and assessed it's significance on his envelope as "FK by a California Mile." That statement most certainly is not in doubt. This is the plate coin for the variety in Early American Cents, Penny Whimsy, the Gilbert Elder reference on the cents of 1796, and in the 1991 Noyes reference. One of the highlights of this great collection, and one of Fred's favorite cents.Certificate Number: 35852.62+/57516986Pedigree: Discovered in England by Henry C. Miller, Thomas L.
