Glossy medium chocolate brown with some lighter brown on the highpoints. Looks great to the unaided eye but a glass reveals smoothing on the cheek and in the field under the jaw. There are a few dull, shallow contact marks on the jaw and upper part of the neck, a diagonal nick on the 9, and a fine scratch between the T & E in STATES. Later die state with only one of the chips showing in the field under the cap. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees clockwise from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Graded VF25 net F15 and tied for CC#7 honors in the Noyes census. Graded VF20 and tied for CC#6 in the Del Bland census. Our grade is net VF20 as well. Not perfect but still quite attractive, and it comes with a great provenance that includes some of the brightest luminaries in large cent collecting. The attribution and Colonel Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
