Date: 1794Glossy chocolate brown and steel with smooth surfaces that are consistent with a much higher grade. The only marks are a pair of shallow fissures from the 17 to the left. Essentially just a heavily worn cent with great surfaces. The upper half of the 79 is clear but only the tops of the 1 & 7 are visible, and those are weak. LIBERTY is gone as is most of the reverse, but the portrait is complete. Fortunately the edge lettering is bold including the upturned leaf following DOLLAR. Only two examples of this variety are known, this piece and a sharper but corroded net AG3 (Daniel Holmes:29 in 9/2009 at $26,500-Adam Mervis:2428 in 2014 at $30,550). And that piece resides in a collection that probably will not reenter the market for a long time. So it might be a case of "now or never" for this variety. Graded Fair-2 and CC#2 behind the AG3 in the Bland census. Noyes says Fair-2 and CC#2 as well, his photo #34941. Our grade is Fair-2. Obviously this is the only example that has received a grade from a third-party grading service, not even considering the CAC approval. A great opportunity for the serious specialist.
