Date: 1787Nicely preserved gilding with just hints of the underlying copper on some high points. There are a few marks around the A of COLUMBIA and E on the reverse. The scratch on the reverse shield and the fine die lines visible around the devices are as seen on the genuine Doubloon. This important electrotype copy was made at the U.S. Philadelphia mint from the Mint Cabinet specimen of the 1787 Brasher Doubloon, which was found in a bullion deposit circa 1838 and rescued from the melting pot by Chief Coiner Adam Eckfeldt. The original is now part of the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution. Ex; Produced by W.E. Dubois at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia circa 1863 - One of 3 examples sold by W. Elliot Woodward 1863 - (probably) Charles Bushnless ~1882 - Private family collection - Colonel Bill Smothers of Midas Coins privately 1960s - Stack's 8/2019:493
