1787 New Jersey Maris 38-c R3 PLURIRUS Error VF20

Sharpness EF40 but covered with very fine granularity under rather glossy dark chocolate and olive brown toning. The highpoints are a lighter shade of brown. Myriad fine scratches are blended into the toning on the obverse, the strongest of these down through the front part of the horse. The edge of the planchet is a bit uneven at the top of the reverse and bottom of the reverse (as struck). The date and obverse legend are strong but the legend outside the wreath is relatively weak, especially the error "R" where a "B" was intended. Actually the "R" began as a "B" but excessive die polishing prior to use opened up the bottom of the "B" and weakened the rest of the reverse legend at the same time. This reverse die (c) was used in 5 different marriages (38, 41, 42, 42.5, and 44), and the error "R" is weak in all of them. A decent example of this "Redbook" type. Weight 143.6 grains.
