Sharpness VF35 with fine roughness on the obverse and old pinscratches across both sides. The scratches all blend perfectly into the toning but they do catch your eye. No verdigris or additional contact marks. There is a rather deep planchet fissure on Britannia's chest and a smaller one on the globe below. A rim bruise at K-10.5 on both sides rounds out the defects. Slightly glossy chocolate brown and olive with lighter brown toning on the devices. Late die state with obvious swelling on both sides. Struck slightly off center to K-10.5 with the reverse rotated 135 degrees clockwise. The date is complete and bold but some of the legend on both sides is off the planchet. Far from perfect but still one of the sharper example known of this very rare variety. Comes with a very nice provenance. Weight 111.4 grains.

Ex Dr. Thomas Hall-Hillyer Ryder-F. C. C. Boyd-John J. Ford, Stack's 6/8/1994:59 (where misattributed in a group lot; let go by Ford thinking it was a duplicate but the variety was lacking in his primary sale in May of 2005)-Mike Ringo-Robert M. Martin (includes the Martin collection envelope)
