Choice glossy medium brown with traces of mint frost in protected areas. No corrosion or contact marks, just very light friction on the devices. Later die state with swelling in the fields and strong die clashmarks. An incuse 1787 is clearly visible at the top of the head on the obverse. The details are not fully struck up on the top of the head and lower part of the seated figure, and there are some small planchet chips that did not completely disappear during the strike. Considered by Hanson and Partrick to be the finest of the variety, but we think the slightly earlier die state Taylor example (Bowers & Merena 3/26/1987:2643) is marginally better based on a stronger strike. But this piece is clearly superior to the Ford and Perkins examples. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU53BN (NGC label #2051418-015 included, and it shows the attribution and Hanson-Partrick provenance). Weight 138.5 grains.
