Glossy brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth except for several planchet fissures on both sides, as nearly always seen on this variety. The largest fissure is at the bottom of the neck. No verdigris and the only contact mark is a tiny rim nick at the E in INDE. Late die state with obvious swelling on the lower part of the portrait. Graded VF30 and considered CC#6 or 7 for the variety by Syd Martin. Many of the details would support that assessment but the swelling associated with the late die state caused loss of detail, especially on the portrait. However the superb color and surfaces (minus the usual fissures) are certainly consistent with a higher grade. The Ford and Perkins examples of the variety are rough with fissures but earlier die states that show a bit more detail. Removed from a PCGS holder graded F12 (PCGS label #685162.12/45294560 included, and it shows the attribution and Martin collection provenance). Weight 133.7 grains. Comes with a nice provenance.
