Silver medal designed by A. Wideman and struck to celebrate the recovery from smallpox by Maria Theresa of Austria on 22 July 1767. This world leader was left with scars but survived the deadly disease. She had 16 children, and three of them died from smallpox infections. A vaccine for smallpox was discovered in 1796 (see the following lot). Struck in very high relief. Weight 539.0 grains, diameter 47 millimeters.
