Glossy medium steel gray with smooth but lightly abraded surfaces. Quality comparable to the Ford example of the variety (Stack's 10/18/2005:5), but the Ford coin had a couple significant digs. The two stamps are clear and evenly impressed, and alone they would surely justify a higher grade. There appears to be some undertype, especially on the obverse (NE side). Possibly struck over a Spanish silver piece but that is just a guess. Only two sixpence varieties are known: the Noe 1-A with thick letters and this Noe 2-B with delicate letters. According to Breen and Ford the Noe 2-B variety may have been a contemporary counterfeit, not an official "mint" issue. We may never know. Only six examples are traced (one of which is impounded in the National Numismatic Collection). An extremely rare prize for the collector of early American colonial coins. Not certifiable at any service. Weight 44.75 grains. Ex Samuel Benton Emory Collection (great-great grandfather of the present consignor; the bulk of his collection was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2010). Letters supplied by the consignor accompany this lot.
