The fleur-de-lys counterstamped billon coinage of 1640 served as circulating money in the French controlled colonies of North America, from Canada down to New Orleans. The counterstamps raised the value of the typical 12 Deniers host coin to 15 Deniers, ensuring the coins would stay in North America and not make their way back to Europe. These counterstamps are found on a wide variety of host coins from many different countries and dating from the late 14th to the early 17th centuries. The present coin is an attractive example of the type with a well-detailed host coin and nicely struck counterstamp. The host coin has a bold date and neat cud at 12 o’clock on the obverse.
